SCASCA was one of the first lines of tanning beds in the USA. They were built by Lohmann-Werke of Germany (now out of business, as is SCA) and are by any standard, old beds. The name SCA was purchased by Sun Industries, Inc. (now Sun Ergoline) in the late 90s, and introduced as a line of average quality tanning beds under the brand name "SCA Series", which included a III and IV Series, and perhaps more. The older beds are the Series I and Series II. One of the unique features of the SCA Series I beds was the motorized canopy, whereby you touch a button, and the canopy lifts up or down. While this sound great at first, it turned out to be problematic, because if the motor failed (and they did) then the person was somewhat trapped inside the bed. The canopy was too heavy for almost anyone to lift, so you would have to crawl out the ends of the bed. If the bed was in a tight installation, which is common for salons, then all the person could do is yell for someone to help them. The motors for the beds are virtually impossible to find. You can try Grangers or another electrical supplier, but I haven't had any luck. I have actually worked on one of these before, and while they were "cool", they were a pain to work on, and I would strongly suggest you avoid them on the used tanning bed market if you are wanting something trouble free. Most of them are so old that they will start developing other issues as well, and the acrylics are very expensive. If my memory serves me correct, they use a choke ballast, which is readily available, but the other parts are not. I simply can not remember if they used F73 or F71 lamps. Most beds that use choke ballasts use F71, but there are some odd beds that do not, and I think some of these SCA beds fit that mold. The SCA beds that use a separate stand and gas springs for the canopy were the mold for the original SonnenBraune 524 and 526 tanning beds. Interesting in a historical way, and they were very good quality in their day, but their day was in the 1980s, which is simply too old to be a reliable tanning bed for daily use. |
